01  AOC is courting the MAHA crowd

The face of the left is now courting RFK Jr.'s movement. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she meets with MAHA activists and works with them, calling the fight over "extraordinary corruption in our agricultural system" nonpartisan.

A KFF poll shows why: 41% of Americans identify with MAHA, a bloc neither party can write off. She will stand with them against Big Food. She will not follow them on vaccines. Half a movement is easier to join than the whole thing.

02  Less sugar as a baby, less cancer at 60

A new study found that babies exposed to less sugar were healthier and less likely to get cancer. Britain rationed sugar until 1953, and when it ended, the amount in the average diet nearly doubled. Researchers compared 64,000 people born just before that jump against those born right after.

The ones born under rationing had 69% less liver cancer and 36% less breast cancer decades later, and their cells aged about 2 years slower. Same country, same genes. The only difference was sugar, before they could walk.

The #1 RMD Mistake Retirees Make

Avoid a Costly RMD Mistake — Allegiance Gold

Most retirees take their RMD the traditional way — in cash. An in-kind distribution may help you avoid selling at the wrong time.

03  Your bedtime melatonin, tied to heart failure

A new study followed 130,000 adults with insomnia. The ones who took melatonin for a year or more were about twice as likely to develop heart failure. They were also 3.5 times more likely to land in the hospital for heart failure, and nearly twice as likely to die within 5 years.

The study only found a link, not a cause, and the heavy users may have been less healthy to begin with. Still, it sells on every drugstore shelf with no prescription and no warning. Worth a second look before your next dose.

04  Keto beat the "healthy" diet on a fatty liver

Fatty liver is just what it sounds like: fat building up inside the liver. It is one of the most common liver problems in the country, and it quietly raises the risk of diabetes and worse liver disease. A new study tried to reverse it with food alone. Researchers fed 42 people either keto (almost no carbs, mostly fat) or the Mediterranean diet (vegetables, olive oil, fish, whole grains) for 5 months, and held every group to the same 10% weight loss.

Keto still cleared far more fat from the liver, 67% versus 45%. Half the keto group shed their prediabetes too. Everyone lost the same weight. The carbs were the difference, not the calories.

✯ WILD STORY

Here is a strange one. Researchers found that a bacterium living in the urinary tract can make its own testosterone. In the lab, the microbe took DHEA, a hormone building block the body already produces, and turned it straight into active testosterone.

Here is why that matters: prostate cancer usually feeds on testosterone, so a standard treatment is to shut the body's supply off. But if bacteria are quietly brewing it right there at the prostate, the tumor may keep getting fed no matter what the rest of the body does. It has only been shown in a dish so far. Still, it points to a hormone factory hiding in the body that nobody knew to look for.

✯ ONE GOOD THING

A newborn kitten in Texas took a 76-mile road trip nobody meant to give it. It had crawled up into a car's engine in Rocksprings and only turned up when the driver reached Kerrville and heard crying under the hood.

Animal control, a local rescue, and staff at a nearby hospital pulled the front grille off the car to reach it. The kitten came out warm, hungry, and completely fine, now safe with Kerrville Pets Alive. It picked a good car.
