01  The White House banned the lab research behind the COVID origin fight

The White House banned the most dangerous gain-of-function research: experiments that make a virus more contagious or deadly on purpose. It is the same work at the center of the COVID lab-leak theory.

For years, a small government panel reviewed the riskiest studies in private, and very few ever got that scrutiny at all. The new order ends that and cuts off the federal money.

It is not a full ban. A case-by-case exception path stays open, and the full oversight system will not be in place until 2027.

02  A dentist fixed a cavity without the drill

Some dentists are now treating early cavities with a peptide gel instead of drilling. Enamel is the hard outer shell of your tooth. A cavity starts as a soft spot where that shell has begun to dissolve, before it turns into an actual hole. The gel carries a tiny protein, P11-4, that pulls minerals from your saliva back into that soft spot and hardens it from the inside.

In trials, early cavities treated this way were about 80% more likely to stop getting worse than ones given usual care, and the soft patches shrank by roughly a third.

The limit: this only works at the early stage, before a hole forms. Once a cavity breaks through, you still need a filling. Caught in time, the tooth rebuilds itself. No drill required.

03  One woman raised her own cow. Here's the math.

A woman who raised her own cow shared what it cost to fill her freezer this way, instead of buying cuts at the butcher. She paid about $940 to have the animal processed into steaks, ground beef, roasts, and sausage: enough to feed her family of five for over a year.

That $940 was just the butchering, since she raised the cow herself. For everyone else, buying a whole cow runs about $4,000 to $6,500 and gives you 400 to 500 pounds of meat, or roughly $8 to $13 a pound for everything. The same cuts add up fast at the store, where ribeyes and roasts run $18 to $30 a pound. For a family that eats the good cuts, that is savings of up to about $2,000 a year. And you know exactly what you are eating.

04  AOC is freezing her eggs. Almost no one goes back for theirs.

Following up from last week: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced she is freezing her eggs and documenting the process for her millions of followers. It is pitched as an insurance policy for your fertility: freeze now, use them later. But a UCLA study of national fertility-clinic data found the promise rarely pays off: among women who froze their eggs between 2014 and 2016, only 5.7% had come back to use them within 5 to 7 years.

Freezing costs about $10,000 to $15,000 up front, plus $500 or more a year to store them. Some of these women are still young and will return later, so that share will climb. Still an expensive insurance policy, especially if you never cash in.

✿ WILD STORY

Researchers gave chronic insomniacs capsules of gut bacteria from healthy donors, yes, made from their stool, and their sleep improved. In an 80-person trial across 7 hospitals, the share of time in bed actually spent asleep climbed from 79% to 93% in a month, and patients lay awake about 42 fewer minutes than the placebo group. The gut and the brain talk more than we thought. Not the bedtime fix anyone pictured. But it worked.

✿ ONE GOOD THING

Scott Suhre was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that clogs the lungs with thick mucus. He got his first double-lung transplant at 19, back in 1995. This June, at 49, he got his second. He was matched with a donor within 48 hours of joining the waiting list, and 3.5 weeks after an 8-hour surgery he was walking on his own again, home in time to keep up with his 10-year-old son. Two gifts of life, from two strangers.
